How does a clutch work?

Standard clutches comprise several different parts fitted together, which operate when you change gear, helping you to pull away smoothly. Parts include the clutch cover, clutch plate, pressure plate, clutch fork, clutch cable or hydraulic system and bearing. The flywheel sits next to the engine keeping the clutch and engine spinning together. Springs force the pressure plate to push the clutch plate against the flywheel, when you are driving the car and your foot is off the pedal. There’s a lot of friction between the clutch plate and flywheel, it’s this that keeps the engine and clutch turning over at the same speed. When you depress the clutch, the clutch cable or hydraulic system pushes the clutch fork forward, pressing the bearing onto the clutch cover diaphragm. This diaphragm pulls the pressure plate away from the clutch plate, disengaging the clutch from the flywheel and engine so that you can change gear.

The Garage can also assist with:

Flywheel replacement

The Garage can replace your car’s flywheel. Leading clutch manufacturers worldwide recommend that whenever a clutch is renewed, the flywheel is inspected and skimmed or replaced if necessary.
The flywheel is a metal disc, fitted directly onto the crankshaft between engine and clutch. It assists in providing a smooth transfer of power from engine to drive train. Put simply, the flywheel gives your vehicle a smoother driving experience. Your car’s flywheel could be worn, if you can see grooves, or glazing and cracks on it. Bring your car along for a free check, and we can confirm if it needs a flywheel replacement.

Concentric slave cylinders

A concentric slave cylinder gives a more comfortable drive, and means lighter pressure on the pedals. It’s more and more common to replace the concentric slave cylinder (CSC) along with the clutch. We recommend fitting a new concentric slave cylinder whenever we do a clutch replacement in vehicles fitted with them. Not replacing the CSV can damage the new clutch, resulting in further expensive.

If there’s anything causing you concern about your clutch, CSV or flywheel, bring your car along to The Garage for expert advice, great value pricing and fast fitting. Book online
